Minister of the Week!

Pastor George Owens
First Baptist Church of Ellenwood

George Owens has been the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Ellenwood for 3 years now. He and his wife Carole have just celebrated their 16th anniversary and they have 3 daughters, Ashleigh, Jordan and Emily. Before coming as pastor at FBC Ellenwood, he served 12 years as a bivocational Youth Minister. George shares the following testimony.

I was brought up in a religious but not a Christian home. Through a series of events I ended up spending some of my free time in a Christian Serviceman's home while stationed in Panama Central America, serving as a Military Policeman. What I saw was true Christianity at work. People prayed to God like they knew Him. They opened their Bibles and studied for themselves and discussed things. The way I grew up you were told what the Bible said and you did not question it. My idea of God was that I didn't want to tick Him off. So as long as I was around people doing worse than me...maybe He would leave me alone.

My thoughts were that God had this big scoreboard in the sky with my name on it. That my good and bad deeds were being weighed out and as long as at the end of my life the good out-weighed the bad I would probably be ok. As I was exposed to true Christianity I began to realize that these people had something I did not have. Where I had religion...they had a relationship. On December 24th 1980 I prayed to receive Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior, repented of my sins and was Born-Again! I can truthfully say that I am a changed person because of Jesus Christ. I have more freedom living God's way than I ever had living my own way.

I wish I could say that after I got saved everything went smoothly. That is not the case for me. God dealt with me in stages. The minute I got saved I quit swearing. If you knew how I talked all my life you would understand what a huge thing this was. I was saved for 1 year before I quit drinking. I was saved for 4 years before God started dealing with me about the music I was buying and listening to. I was saved 7 years before I started going to church. Bible study yes, but church no. (Big mistake) And lastly, I was saved 10 years before I got victory over sexual immorality. It was the 1 area that satan had a grip on me when all other things had been turned over to the Lord. (18 years clean) to God be the glory!

If you are a Christian, pastor or church leader, and struggling over sin...don't give up! Keep fighting! If you resist the devil he will flee from you. I am living proof that you can get victory. If you are not a Christian I beg you to give your life to Christ. He has given me a life far better than I could have ever imagined or dreamed for on my own and He will do the same for you. If you think because many Christians are not what they are supposed to be that that will get you off the hook you are sadly mistaken. You will give account for your choices and not be able to hide behind anyone else. Religion will send you to hell quicker than anything else. It's about a relationship, not what you call yourself. Religion has never saved anyone...only Jesus Christ can save you from your sins.

Lastly, be defined by what God says about you, not other people. I've heard all my life all the reasons why I couldn't succeed. I would not make it as a Military Policeman. Who was I to start my own business? Your going to Bible College at the age of 29? You think you could be a youth minister? You, Pastor a church? It seems that I've heard it all my life, and sometimes by well-meaning people. If I listened to other people all the time I don't know where I would be now except probably miserable. You determine to be what God has called you to be. Dare to dream big...our God is a great God and I believe He wants to accomplish great things through you...will you let Him. Remember if you are going to lead, you must first turn your back to the crowd.

 Devotion

At Christmas we see the little Christ child being born into the world. A little helpless baby cooing with the little animals around Him. Sadly, most of us want to keep Christ there in the manger. What about the baby that would grow up and upset the world, over-throw the money changers carts and call the religious leaders lower than whale poop? What about that same man naked, bleeding, beaten beyond recognition, beard plucked out, nailed to an Old Rugged Cross dying to save man-kind?

Here in America we have really bought into that weak and mild side of Jesus. We hear that God is a God of love, (which He is). The pastor of the largest evangelical church in America has stated that he will not preach on hell, judgment or sin because it might make some people feel bad. We have preachers that want to make Jesus your 'little buddy'. When is the last time you heard or preached a sermon on Hell? Yes, Jesus calls you 'friend' and even His child if you have been born-again. But what about the other side of Emmanuel, (God with Us)? What about His anger, His wrath, His righteousness and holiness that demands that He judge and punish sin? Look at the white throne of judgment found in Revelation 20.

Isaiah 9:6 tells us that 1 of the names given to the child is "Mighty God". The Hebrew used here carries with it the idea of a soldier or warrior that is coming to bring justice and righteousness. To right the wrongs. Vs. 7 tells us the kind of kingdom Jesus will set up, "To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness." So, what about the other side of Jesus/God? If we are going to preach love and mercy we have to preach wrath and judgment. He will judge sin and punish it. The only way to avoid it is to believe that Jesus came and died in your place and make Him your personal Lord & Savior. That is why Jesus came... and that is the Good News!
